Lilacs

Day 49  60/60 Painting Challenge  - I picked these lilacs at the school area in Warner Springs.  This arrangement is an ode to Margarita.  Two of the stalks wilted before I could paint them.  Fortunately, I blocked in the painting while they were still fresh.  I'm working on painting values and shapes.  I think I captured the feel of lilacs.    Oil on board.  6" X 6"   $75

3 Cecil Brunner

Day 48  - 60/60 Painting Challenge - I'm behind by 2 days.  Stan is lagging also.  I have a climbing rose bush; Cecil Brunner.  Right now it's loaded with rose buds & blooms.  They're very tiny and they don't live long.  The container is a liquore glass.  Very teeny.   Oil on board   7" X 5" SOLD

Left the Bouquet

Day 47   60/60 Painting Challenge    -  I bought a bouquet of tulips at Trader Joe's last tuesday.  Today is the first chance I had to paint it.  These 5 tulips were the survivors; they are beaming!  Oil on board 8"x6" $225 Please email to purchase

Santa Ysabel

Day 46  60/60 Painting Challenge  - Stan's painting - This was painted at the north end of Santa Ysabel.

Orchid

Day 45 - 60/60 Painting Challenge  - I painted this orchid without any confidence.  I didn't take to this painting.  I did receive a few nice comments about it on fb.  I think it photographed well.  Oil on board  6" X 8"

Lake Cuyamaca in AM

Day 44  - 60/60 Painting Challenge  - Stan's Painting.   -  This is early morning at Lake Cuyamaca.  Acrylic

Kiersten

Day 43   60/60 Painting Challenge   -  I posted this on Facebook even though it's not plain-air.  I like the small format of this painting and it only took a few hours.  I received permission from Kiersten to paint her.  This was her profile picture on fb.  She changed her profile photo since I painted this.  Oil on board

Oaks Near Lake Henshaw

Day 42   60/60 Painting Challenge    -   Stan's painting   -  Oaks near Lake Henshaw, San Diego County.

Watercolor   6" X 10"

Mums

Day 41   60/60 Painting Challenge  -  Stan brought me a bouquet of roses and mums.  The roses wilted fast; the mums remained.  The photo of the painting seems too light.  But I'm not complaining; I'm usually too dark.  Oil on board    8" X 6"

Lakeside

Day 40  -  60/60 Painting Challenge  -  Stan's painting  -  This was painted during a San Diego Watercolor Society Paint-out at the lake in Lakeside, CA.  As you may know, painting in oil at a water-colour paint-out is "painting on the dark side".  The day was overcast damp & grey and getting some colour into this was somewhat of a challenge.  Oil on canvas.  8" X 10"

Spring Flowers

Day 39 - 60/60 Painting Challenge -  I painted this at one of Stan's students' house.  Bulbed flowers are aplenty here in Julian, CA.  We painted this with direct approach.  (no blending or fussing)  This was not going to be used in this challenge but my week is getting away from me and I didn't finish a painting today.  So this is my stand-by.  Oil on canvas board.  10" X 8"

High Desert II

Day 38  60/60 Painting Challenge   Stan's painting  -   This is another painting of the high desert.  This is oil on canvas.   10" X 8"

Wildflowers In A Vase

Day 37 - 60/60 Painting Challenge -  I picked a few wildflowers from my yard; I'm always amazed at how they survive the snow and reseed to form new life.  Again, the colour is not quite accurate.  It's raining today and difficult to photograph with enough light.  Oil on panel    7" X 5"  $75

High Desert

Day 36  -  60/60 Painting Challenge - Stan's painting -  8" X 10"  Acrylic

"At first glance it seems as though the desert is not very colourful.  Here I have tried to balance blue, violet, ochre and green."

Iris & Cecil Brunner

Day 35  60/60 Painting Challenge -  I started my floral paintings today.  I clipped this from my small garden; iris & climbing rose.  I had to paint fast as the iris was wilting in front of my very eyes.  I loved the color of the translucent light; I struggled to get it.  I think I fell short.  Overall though, I'm pleased.  Oil on board     8" X 6"

Morning at the Lake

Day 34  60/60 Painting Challenge  - Stan's Day    -  Today is Easter Sunday.  Stan went out plein air painting at Lake Cuyamaca which is about 8 miles from our house.  It was so early I was barely out of bed  when he left.  He had a good painting session.  Oil on panel    6" X 8"

Red Egyptian Bottle

Day 33  60/60 Painting Challenge  This is the last of the bottles for awhile (I think).  I'll be switching to florals.  This glass bottle was gifted me by my daughter and son-in-law, Mike.  He travels to Europe and the Middle East frequently for his work.  My daughter sometimes travels with him.  I now have a collection of beautiful ornate bottles.  This is the brightest.  Oil on board    6" X 6"  $75

Gray Day

Day 32  60/60 Painting Challenge  - Stan's Day  -  "This is another view of the Santa Ysabel Valley on a tray day."  Oil on board   8" X 10"

Iridescent Bottle

Day 31 - 60/60 Painting Challenge  -  Another bottle.  I'm trying to describe glass on a 2 dimensional surface.  Tomorrow I'll paint another glass piece and then I'm off to do something different; maybe flowers.

Oil on panel   7" X 5"   $75

Old Oaks

Day 30  60/60 Painting Challenge - Stan's Day -  This is a view from Pine Hills Rd. in Julian, CA.  It's about 9:30am.  Oil on canvas.  7 1/2 X 9 1/2"

Old Lavender Bottle

Day 29 - 60/60 Painting Challenge - I continue to paint old bottles.  On my fb post someone said they collect old bottles too.  They said I captured the colour of the magnesium lavender.  My idea is to understand glass; transparency, texture, reflections, colour etc.  The glass bottles are simple which gives me time to paint for shows and galleries.  Oil on board    7" X 5"  $75

Lake Cuyamaca Afternoon

I have lived in Julian for many years and never tire of painting this lake.  Watercolor  6" X 10"

Bouquet of Daffodils

Day 27  60/60 Painting Challenge   I painted this in class.  It was an exercise in direct painting.  Each brushstroke had to be the correct colour & value (how I saw it)  No reworking.  Oil on canvas board

10" X 8"   SOLD

Spring Sunlight

Day 26  60/60 Painting Challenge  Stan's Day   "This painting is a spring sunlit day in Santa Ysabel Valley.  The hills and valley are covered in spring green but I warmed the painting using earth tones."

Oil on board     6" X 6"

Old Bottle and Lemon

This is another old bottle painting.  I paired it with a lemon and a folded cloth to add colour.  The trick is to paint the bottle so that it looks transparent yet add the colour of the bottle so that it looks iridescently old.  Oil on board.   7" X 5"   $75

Pond in Pine Hills

Day 24 - 60/60 Painting Challenge - Stan's Day  "This pond is visible from Deer Lake Park Rd.  Looking west; east of Pine Hills, Julian."  Painted on 140# Lanaquarelle Cold Press.  5 3/4 X 6 1/2"  $75

Lisa's Gift

About 30 years ago I visited my daughter in Las Vegas.  We went window shopping in a nearby mall.  I spotted 2 small ceramic birds that I liked.  For my following birthday I received them as gifts.  I was surprised & pleased.  So today I decided to paint one to see if it could look like ceramic.  I also wanted to paint with gray tones.  I added a few highlights but the overall light was generalised & there wasn't much contrast.  I will paint another one in different light.  I do like the results of this bird anyway.  Sweet.

Oil on board       6" X 6"    $75

Unlit Candle

Day 22  Unlit Candle   Stan's painting   Watercolor  10" X 6"  $75

Plum Passion

Day 21 of the 60/60 Painting Challenge.  This candle is called, Plum Passion.  It's fragrance is a combination of plum, raspberry, vanilla & cinnamon.  I was in olfactory heaven while painting.  I added a bit of whimsy with the background.  Oil on board  7" X 5" $75

Flowers in a Cup

A simple vignette paintedfrom drawings of a setup in one of my classes.  Drawings from life but painted from memory.  The painting is water colour 8" X 6" on Lanaquarelle 140# hot press paper.  $75

Old Blue Bottle

I have a collection of old bottles.  The first bottle in my collection I dug out of my yard in San Diego.  Back in the 20's people buried their trash.  I discovered 2 bottles when I dug to plant a vegetable garden.  This bottle I probably bought in a bottle shop in Lordsburg, AZ.  I hope to paint several over the next few weeks.  Some are iridescent.  I see such beauty in these discarded antiquities.  Oil on board.
